Resident Aliens: In 2002, the U.S. began deporting former Cambodian refugees with criminal offenses, even those who had arrived as children after the Cambodian genocide. RESIDENT ALIEN follows three “returnees”–KK, China and Looney–as they adapt to an unfamiliar homeland after a lifetime spent in this country. Largely shunned by Cambodian society, with few skills and little money, they must find a way to survive or end up on the streets. KK, a B-boy from Long Beach, becomes a teacher and surrogate father of a street dance troupe of poor children in Cambodia, while Looney and China struggle with their relationship.
The Asian American Legal Defense and Education Fund (AALDEF), founded in 1974, is a national organization that protects and promotes the civil rights of Asian Americans. By combining litigation, advocacy, education, and organizing, AALDEF works with Asian American communities across the country to secure human rights for all.
